Description
Properties and function of next generation electrochemical energy storage are not only rooted in the chemistry but at least as much in their structure all the way from atomic to micron scales, which puts high demands on in situ analytical techniques. In this seminar talk, I will demonstrate the possibility of in situ small and wide angle X-ray scattering to quantify the nanoscale phase evolution of active materials in Li-O2 batteries and Na-I based hybrid supercapacitors during device operation. Data analysis combined with (stochastic) modelling results in unexpected mechanistic insights and rational design criteria for improved device performance.
